A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
